A discussion of the history and trends in the fashion and clothing styles of the 1950's, including a look at the the influence that world war II, rock-n-roll music, and Hollywood films had on shaping the fashion industry in the 50's.

It is sometimes tempting to think of the history of fashion in terms of distinct units of decades, with a new era being ushered in with the drop of the ball in Times Square on New Years day of the first year of a new decade. However, this thinking tends to cloud the broad sweep of history, which takes shape as it unfolds from the trends and events of the past.

No discussion of the world of fashion in the 1950’s would be complete without examining the profound impact World War II had on the industry. Europe and North America had traditionally looked to Paris, the international capitol of fashion, for stylistic inspiration and guidance in this realm but with the German invasion of Paris, this link was severed and designers and manufacturers in the rest of the world were forced to rely on domestic talent.

There was also a shortage of fabrics and trimmings used in clothing during the war, and rationing systems that regulated the quantity of clothing, which could be purchased, were introduced in countries like Britain. This climate caused wartime fashion to become very functional, almost militaristic in appearance. The typical wartime outfit in Britain, for example, was the tailored suit with squared off shoulders, tapered waist and just-below-the-knee length skirt. Shoes and bags, and accessories were also functional, with the exception of hats. The materials for making hats were not rationed so large, bold designs in hats were characteristic. But generally speaking, the range of garments being produced was extremely limited. Little elegant evening wear was being produced, for example, because textiles like silk were needed to make parachutes. There was also a ban on the production of hosiery for the same reason. Hosiery was still being made from silk, as nylon was not yet widely available.

As British and American designers were not eclipsed by Parisian designers during the war, they emerged in the post war era with a much sharper profile in the fashion world. Both countries had made significant progress in mass-market clothing production, also known as “ready-to-wear” clothing, in part because of having to produce massive amounts of uniforms during the war.

After the war, women returned to the home and to a less active role in society. Femininity returned to the fashion styles of the day. No longer curtailed by the rationing of textiles and restrictions in buying, they wanted clothing with reams of fabric. Even make-up was heavy – many women went through their day with a full painted face compete with dark eye liner, colored eye shadow, mascara, rouge, to dark red lipstick. The cosmetics and fragrance industries boomed. Women reveled in their access to products that had been of short supply during the war, and perfect grooming was essential.

The silhouette of the day in the early to mid 1950’s leaned toward the formal, and the tailored. Women wanted to present themselves as mature, elegant, and sophisticated. It was important to look “every inch the lady” from head to toe, and this was the female cultural norm that was conditioned in every girl from a very young age from her authority figures in addition to the movies she saw at the theater on Saturday night. Even the adventurous world of high fashion popularized on the runways and catwalks of the Paris fashion shows remained formal.

Watching the popular Hollywood “pictures” of the day can provide a fun study in 1950’s fashion styles. My favorite film from the era is “How to Marry a Millionaire” featuring sex siren, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, and Betty Grable. It is a visual feast of 1950’s fashion not to be missed! And the image of female beauty of the day was a curvy one with shapely hips and a prominent bust, although it was important that a women’s waist be small. Many women wore girdles, waist cinchers and shapers underneath their clothing to achieve this desired image. Women that collect vintage clothing today will attest to the fact that the waist dimensions of vintage dresses and skirts feel abnormally small when compared to that of the hips and bust.

Tailored suits, dresses with bolero jackets, twin sets, and shirt waisted dresses with full pleated swing skirts were worn during the day, and full-length cocktail gowns with elbow length opera gloves and bold statement jewelry were worn for evening wear. The 1950’s were a time of practiced etiquette – a time when every occasion demanded a studied attention to clothes and accessories. For example, the way you dressed when you went to have lunch with the ladies was different than the way you dressed when you went grocery shopping or attended your children’s school functions. A popular style for the 1950’s woman who wanted to appear provocative was the wiggle dress or tight-fitting, high-waisted pencil skirt.

The 50’s were time of prosperity. Families had more disposable income and, let’s not forget, lots of children! They don’t call it the baby boom era for nothing. As a result, a brand new market emerged catering to young people. Many teenagers wanted more relaxed clothing styles than those of their parents. Teenage girls favored tight sweaters and cardigans worn over pointy “bullet bras”, paired with full circle skirts with stiff nylon petticoats underneath for fullness. Teenagers across the world were dancing to the new American rock-n-roll music and the full skirt and petticoat combination made for quite a show as you spun around on the dance floor. Poodle skirts were worn with black and white saddle shoes at sock hops where teenagers danced to Elvis Presley. Many experts agree that it was in the 1950’s that the fashion and music industries became forever linked.

Tight jeans and pants were a popular fifties clothing style with both teenage boys and girls. Pedal pushers became e a very trendy style of pants for girls. “Good girls”, Annette Funicello and Doris Day popularized this fashion look for young girls in the 50’s. The “greaser look” for young men, also unique to the 1950’s, was distinguished by the white tee shirt and black motorcycle jacket, greased back hair and sideburns, popularized by James Dean and Marlon Brando.

From the mid 1950’s, tailored suits from Italian designers, in particular, began to represent “the ultimate in modernity” for the modern 50’s gent. Italian clothing was being imported to the United States and Britain in greater quantities than ever before. Even domestic menswear manufacturers and tailors were advertising their single-breasted suits with tapered trouser pants as being made “in the Italian” style. Striped ties were popular for men, and the love affair with Italian menswear didn’t end there, Italian leather shoes with pointed toes were extremely in vogue in the world of 50’s men’s fashion.

Toward the end of the decade, designers began to present less structured clothing. They began rebelling against the tight-waisted, tight-fitting, full-skirted styles of the post-war years. Chanel’s relaxed sweater suit designs for women were gaining in popularity. Fashion was trending toward more comfort and wear ability. The sack dress from the late 1950’s was the precursor to some of the shift dresses that became popular in the 60’s when hemlines went shockingly up! That, however, is another story. I, for one, will always be a fan of 1950’s clothing. It was a decade of vibrant fashion activity that celebrated some of the best qualities of the traditional gender roles, including all things feminine for women and a strong masculine archetype for men.

If your thinking about having Boudoir photographs done for your wedding this article can tell you a little about what to expect and what you should look for. These are images and photographs that you will have for years to come and they should express your own personality.

What Is Boudoir Photography?

Historically, the term “Boudoir” was used to describe a lady’s dressing room. In the early 1980’s “Boudoir photography” was first used to refer to a type of intimate photography. Nowadays, it’s quite popular for women to have Boudoir photographs done, usually to surprise that special someone in their life. Boudoir photography sessions can be as varied as each individual. Each person has their unique opinion of what is sensual and beautiful and each photography session and resulting photos reflect that beauty.

What if I don’t feel comfortable making Nude Photos?

A Boudoir Photography session should be fun! If you’re uncomfortable posing for Nude photographs then don’t do them. Every woman is beautiful and sexy. You don’t have to take your clothes off to take gorgeous sensual photographs. Working in collaboration with an experienced photographer you can create amazing images clothed, partially clothed or “implied nude” (when the photographer sets the scene so that you appear to be nude but nothing is showing). Communication is key – make sure that you have talked in detail with the photographer about your comfort levels and what your vision is of the finished product and trust that he or she will keep everything hidden that you want hidden. Thanks to modern digital technology it is not difficult to add in extra shadows or use blurring effects to make sure that the finished product is exactly what you want. Keep in mind also that some photographers may not shoot nude photographs, so if you are looking for nude photos ask!

But – I’m too old! I’m too overweight! I’m not pretty enough!

Every woman is beautiful and sexy! Ignore the overly skinny supermodels that you see everyday in advertisements! Real women are all around you and they are all beautiful. Be confident in yourself and your sensual nature. And be confident that your photographer is experienced and can arrange lighting and posing in order to capture “your best side”.

What do I wear?

Wear what you feel sexy in! A Boudoir Photography session has ample time for several wardrobe changes so bring any outfits you think you might want to wear and any accessories that go with it. Examples include a man’s white dress shirt; a baseball jersey and ball cap; lacy nightie; a French maid’s costume (great use of old Halloween costumes) and feather duster; plaid mini skirt and white button down shirt and anything else you can imagine! Bring along a suitcase full of outfits. Don’t forget high heeled shoes, necklaces, bracelets and other accessories – hats, feather boas, etc. This is a good time to play dress up! Plan out your outfits ahead of time and try them on with different jewelry to see how they look. The photographer may also bring some additional accessories but you should ask about props ahead of time.

What about my Make-up?

Many ladies can do their own make-up but there are other options. Salons and department store make-up counters can be good resources or you can ask your photographer if they have someone they recommend. In most cases the photography studio can contract a make up artist for an additional fee. Don’t feel compelled to wear a lot of make-up if it simply isn’t your style.

Where should I have Boudoir Photographs taken?

These are not the kind of images that are on a check list at a mall portrait studio, they need to be personal and intimate. Many women choose a photographer who will come to their home and take photographs in their bedroom. Other women choose to go to the photographer’s studio and have their Boudoir session there. These days, though, Boudoir isn’t limited to a bedroom setting and lingerie. A number of my own customers have come to me because they were intrigued by my Retro Pinup work. This is yet another option in Boudoir photography.

Nervous? What about a Group Photo Session?

You and three or four of your best girlfriends can get together and do your sessions at the same time. These can be done at the studio, your home or on location and should be approached with a party atmosphere. Each of you will be photographed individually as you are dressed (or undressed) based on each person’s comfort level.

Some photographers (but not all) offer couples sessions. These sessions are romantic, sensual, playful, fun and always tasteful. If you are interested in this type of session make it part of a weekend ‘away’ at a local hotel. This leaves you free from distractions and you will have some extra memories of the event.

Retouching

Many photographers include retouching with their portrait prints and albums but be sure to ask how much is included with your session. Most photographers will include minor retouching and color correction as part of their service – after all they want their work to be well represented.

Protecting your privacy

Privacy should be a major concern during your boudoir sessions. All boudoir images are kept in strict confidence and no images will be shown without permission from the client in writing. Make sure your photographer has a privacy policy as well as any professional printers they may use.

Preparing for a Boudoir Photo Session

Wear loose fitting clothing. Avoid tight fitting undergarments as they are the most likely to leave elastic pressure lines on your skin. If you are not doing the session at your home bring as many accessories, outfits and ideas as you can. If you decide to not use everything then it is just a little extra to carry around but its far better then to wish you had brought something.

If you love the sexy, steamy pinups and glamor girl movies of the past, you’ll love the feel of a magical vintage slip. Each slip has a bit of lace trim, a bow, or flounce. There are many different shapes, kinds, and sizes, easily available for you to express your unique personal style. You’ll probably be surprised to find out that vintage slips are a small investment, since not as many people collect them, and that they are easily found in many vintage clothing stores, especially online auctions and specialty stores.

1. Vintage slips are a classic style that can be enjoyed by anyone.
Lingerie has changed a lot over the years– from the layered underclothes of the 19th century to the loosening of the waist cinchers in the 1920’s, to the pin up curves of the 1940’s and finally to the fitted slips of the 1950’s. The fabric used in underclothes and slips has varied from cotton to silk, which was used in the more expensive undergarments. Rayon, initially called artificial silk, was eventually known as rayon in 1924. It became more widely used in and after the 20’s. Nylon came on the market in the 40’s (during WWII it was meant as a replacement for silk) and by the 50’s most slips were made from nylon. In the mid 50’s polyester was introduced as a miracle “wash & wear” fabric and soon became more popular in underwear than nylon.

Once they were covered up and only rarely glimpsed, but now slips are appreciated for aesthetics in the pin up look, as shock fashion (think underwear as outerwear a la Madonna) and layered and worn openly by the punks. A full slip is simple glamor. Slips are elegant and make us all a little more lady-like when we wear one.

2. A special vintage slip is a small investment that can make you feel fantastic.
A vintage slip is usually a modest price when compared to the price of an outfit, yet will add a luxurious touch underneath any skirt, dress or suit. Perhaps most importantly, it makes your vintage clothing, and even modern clothing, fit better since it’s smoother getting it on, and helps the garment to lay correctly on you, not bunching up or pulling.

Try wearing a slip as a camisole with a bit of lace peeking out or even at the bottom of the hem for a layered look. They also make beautiful and comfy things to wear to bed. Low price means your dollar goes further and you can buy more than one.

3. A vintage slip is uniquely yours
Although you can say a slip is a slip, upon closer inspection, each one has its own touch like a tiny ribbon rosette, lace trim on the bodice or hem, sheer fabric inserts or appliqués. Try personalizing your slips with embroidery or initials. Wear it a cocktail dress if you have one that covers enough. Use it as sleepwear or loungewear and all you’ll need is a pretty robe. Use it as a statement piece that says, “I like a bit of luxury.” Try a “tea-stained” slip for a bohemian vintage look.

Now go out and explore and find that perfect slip!
Check a variety of vintage markets including online and auctions, thrift and consignment shops. If the used factor is not for you then watch for the terms “NWT”. It means “new with tags” and means that it is store stock that was never worn. See if you can spot pieces marked “unworn”, “Store Stock” or “dead stock”. Watch for quality fabrics without piling, holes or spots.

Quality brands to look for are Vassarette, Barbizon, Seamprufe, Van Raalte, Wonder Maid and Vanity Fair. With your small investment you’ll get lots of enjoyment with a garment that never goes out of style.

Fun Fact: Elizabeth Taylor made the white slip famous when she starred as the hot-blooded Maggie “The Cat” in Tennessee Williams’s 1958 movie, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Once you’ve seen her prowl around her boudoir in a slinky white slip you’ll never think of lingerie the same way again.

Everything retro seems to be in demand these days. This includes pin-up art. Pin-up posters of Vargas and Getty girls are always in demand. Fans can even buy reproductions of the bathing suits, dresses and blouses that pin-up girls wore in their most famous posters. And now, it’s possible for fans of pin-up art to become their own pin-up girls: Yes, pin-up photography is now a growing field.Do an online search for “pin-up photography.” You’ll turn up pages worth of photo studios across the country willing to turn you into the subject of your own pin-up poster. It’s little surprise that this is becoming a hot trend. Photographers working in this field transform you into a glamorous pin-up girl, one who’s sexy yet somehow innocent all at once. Pin-up photography makes a great gift. It’s also a fun way to feel elegant, attractive and just a bit naughty.

The pin-up photography experience starts with makeup. Photographers will use just the right amount of makeup to transform you into an authentic Gibson Girl or turn you into a dead ringer for a George Petty model. Next comes the clothing. Quality pin-up photographers boast a wardrobe of bikinis, mini-skirts and dresses that look perfectly at home in the world of pin-up art.

Finally, it’s time to take the picture. Top pin-up photographers will recreate famous pin-up poses. They’ll use props, much like the classic pin-up artists did, to create a funny, sexy and charming shot. Subjects can opt to be photographed in black and white or color. If you’d like to be transformed into a pin-up girl, do a quick online search for pin-up photographers in your area. If you live in or near a big city, the odds are good you’ll turn up a few.

Be sure to interview any pin-up photographer before working with him or her. Ask about prices, the clothing the photographer has available and how many pin-up photos the photographer has done. Ask, too, for references. Finally, ask to see some samples of the photographer’s work. Once you find a pin-up photographer with whom you are comfortable, it’s time to set up an appointment. Remember, your attitude will greatly influence the final result. If you’re excited, and willing to experiment with different poses and props, you’re more likely to end up with a top-quality pin-up photo. If you’re daring enough, then, pin-up photography can make for a great way to travel back in time, to the days when Petty and Gibson Girls dominated magazines, calendars and advertisements.

If you’d like to learn more about learn pinup photography, stop by Martin Castin’s Pin up Ferret. You can read articles about this fascinating genre, and get a glimpse into an idealistic past.

The patriotic charm of pinup models posing in photos wearing sailor girl garb is not a new idea, but it has been embraced by a whole new generation of pinup models and photographers who are keeping the all American pinup sailor girl image alive. Where did it all begin?

The patriotic charm of pinup models posing in photos wearing sailor girl garb is not a new idea, but it has been embraced by a whole new generation of pinup models and photographers who are keeping the all American pinup sailor girl image alive. The origins of pinup gals donning army duds can be traced to WWII, and the practice of GIs hanging pictures of sexy girls (“pinning them up”) in their lockers to keep them company overseas, and painting them on the sides of their fighter planes. As a show of support, the models began dressing in patriotic sailor or army outfits. The creation of the USO in the forties saw the formation of the infamous camp shows, at which performers and sex symbols from Hollywood, such as Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, and later, Marilyn Monroe, would make appearances to brighten the spirits of the troops.

This tradition continues, and you can still find gorgeous gals in sailor suits singing and dancing and bringing a little fun to the fighting men and women of the US military.

Modern pinup girls might be edgier and have more tattoos than their predecessors, but they embrace the hair, makeup, and clothing styles of the forties and fifties. Most stay true to the “good girl” style of pose and dress in the tradition of early cheesecake pinup photography, just like the photos that hung in those GI’s lockers. The idea behind traditional pinup modeling is not to be trashy or overly-provocative, but to embody a cute and sexy girl next door look.

Add to it a sailor girl or army girl outfit and you’ve got something a GI from any generation would love. Contemporary fashion designers have rediscovered the sexy charm of the military-inspired looks of the forties and fifties pinup culture, making it possible for models and photographers to continue to create patriotic imagery for our boys overseas with sailor girl suits, sailor dresses, shipmate costumes, first mate outfits, and army costumes.

These days, a patriotic show of support is important to a lot of Americans. With our country at war with two nations, many of our bravest and boldest have been deployed to dangerous and remote parts of the world. Pinup girls who want to show their support are sending photographs and calendars to troops fighting in foreign lands. One pinup model that sends frequent care packages to the troops often dresses up in sailor and army girl costumes and sends the photos to US army bases overseas. She has created a large and appreciative fan base and her donation operation has grown to be one of the largest of its kind created by a pinup model.

The tradition of the American patriotic pinup model will never go out of style. As long as there is a soldier being deployed to distant, dangerous lands, a photo of a pinup girl in a cute sailor girl dress, smiling only to him and saluting his bravery, will always have a place… pinned up on his wall.

Burlesque & pinup fashions are suddenly all over the Internet. The original burlesque designs with their risqué overtones have become the fun fashion, being adapted and adopted by rockabilly. Almost every city now hosts regular burlesque events where not just the performers, but the audience gets to dress the part as well.Origins of burlesque – lingerie on show! The word burlesque probably derives from the French, which describes a piece of slightly outrageous, humorous art. The term burlesque originally applied to shows intended for middle or lower classes. Such shows lampooned upper class niceties and parodying upper class entertainments like opera & dance. Such music and comedy shows and plays grew in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic during the nineteenth century. In Victorian England, where even “a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking”, burlesque challenged its audience by offering rather more than a “glimpse of stocking” – the lure of young ladies appearing in tights and lingerie! Certainly demure by today’s standards these slightly suggestive interludes certainly boosted the popularity of burlesque. Lydia Thompson took a burlesque troupe, called the British Blondes to New York near the end of the 1860s where they were an immediate hit.

At first they were feted by the press, but before long strident voices, from the pulpit and the papers were complaining of loose morals and indecency. The result of all this adverse publicity was to spread the word about burlesque far and wide in America effectively having the reverse effect to that desired by burlesque’s critics – female burlesque troupes with close copies of the original British act sprung up around the country.

These shows owed a great deal of their structure to the minstrel shows of the time and generally consisted of three parts – the initial section featuring the ladies, the middle section was a mix of male comedians and specialty acts and the final part the grand finale. Copying Lydia Thompson’s lead, most of the troupes had female managers.

However towards the end of the nineteenth century, as male managers took over, they switched the emphasis away from comedy to push boundaries, determined to show as much uncovered female flesh as the laws would allow.

This form of entertainment metamorphosed in the early twentieth century into a mix of music hall, satire and striptease. During the twenties the bias continued inexorably towards striptease and away from the accompanying elements. This shift doubtlessly was burlesque’s downfall; by the thirties the popularity of burlesque waned as a social reaction against what had become slightly tawdry striptease shows. Local authorities were no longer as tolerant of this entertainment, which had lost much of its music hall variety flavor.

New Burlesque

In the mid nineteen nineties the genre was resurrected, with troupes in the USA, and the trend has snowballed over to the UK. Now, once more on both sides of the channel, it is possible to see shows equal in glamour, bawdiness and variety to equal the art form in its heyday in clubs and theatres in major cities. Arguably the Internet has played a major part to spread the interest in the genre. There are websites, such as Ministry of Burlesque dedicated to promoting it, to teaching dance, makeup and fashion.

Burlesque lingerie fashion

The mainstay of this style is lingerie and modern burlesque generally concentrates on the fifties and to a lesser degree the forties look. This extends not only to clothing, but hats, footwear and makeup too. There have always been fans of fifties silk and nylon stockings. When pantyhose all but killed the stocking market vast numbers of stocking mills closed. Their huge stocking machines were destroyed and along with it the expertise to manufacture fully-fashioned stockings. Now the few remaining machines are being reconditioned and brought back into service to once more produce copies of the fifties seamed stockings.

However a few companies trading online still have limited supplies of the original fifties stockings so the purists can satisfy their need to the ‘real thing’ rather than the modern copies. Sadly, once that depleting stock is exhausted, they will only be viewable in museums and private collections.

However, for burlesque stage performance it is the fishnet tights or pantyhose that are still really popular.

Companies are making exact copies both of retro costumes and burlesque accessories, from ostrich feather fans to bullet bras, sensing an opportunity not to be missed, are enticing. Even well-known burlesque artists are being enticed by lingerie brands to lend their names and expertise to burlesque-inspired lingerie designs.

Burlesque is eagerly embraced by all physiques, from plus size to skinny-minny, proving how empowering it can be to women – all physiques are equally welcomed, but there is not set ‘burlesque costume’ either. It is very common for burlesque artists to take everyday lingerie, adapt it by sewing on sequins to devise their own unique take on burlesque. However the common thread that runs through the new outfits, going right back to the earliest days of the art form is the element of ‘tease’, the showing of rather more lingerie and stocking tops that would normally be seen in everyday life.

Rockabilly fashion

Over the years a number of fashion styles have grown towards each other, oft times overlapping. The word rockabilly was used around the mid forties and was a blend of hillbilly and rock and roll music styles. Today’s pinup photographers generally recreate the stylish fifties imagery which overlaps but is distinct from rockabilly. Many rockabilly enthusiasts have tattoos and piercings, and that certainly was never a fad of the fifties, but a modern phenomenon.

Pinup fashion

The term pinup also has blurred origins, covering photos of movie stars from around the thirties and forties, but also the airbrushed fantasy women gracing men’s magazines by such exponents as Petty and Elvgren. The fashions often featured nylons and lingerie, sometimes being exposed by a sudden unexpected gust of wind or other ‘mishap’ that befell the model. The intention was actually to reveal very very little by today’s standards. It is a certainty that pinup art, with the sexy lingerie has strongly influenced the outfits adopted by many of today’s burlesque artists.

Aside from the fact that they contain pictures of beautiful women in charming poses, pinup art is interesting largely because of the clothes worn by the models. Those seductive and elegant pieces from the 1930s to the 1950s look downright sinful when worn by the sultry pinup girls. The modern pinup girls of today go to great lengths just to be faithful to the fashion of the classic pinup era. Thanks to the growing interest of women in pinup fashion, more and more designers are producing clothes fit for the most earnest modern pinups. The number of specialty shops selling vintage and fetish clothing have increased considerably.

Admittedly, dressing up to imitate the classic pinup look will take a lot of patience on your part. Aside from the clothes, you also have to perfect your hair and makeup. Attention to detail is a must if you want to pull off the pinup look. Modern pinup models should always look divine, with perfect makeup and every hair in place. Then there are the poses. Cheesecake poses are always sexy, but not overtly so.

For women who would like to dress like a modern pinup, several items are essential to perfect the look. First is the corset or bustier. Remember the infamous bustier Madonna wore to her concert? It was inspired by the traditional bustier and corsets, which are worn to shape the waist and push the breasts so that it would appear fuller. To give you an idea on the perfect pinup look, take a cue from Bettie Page. This 1950s goddess set the standard for pinup queens, with her full curves and trademark bangs. What sets her apart from other pinup models such as Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable is her preference for darker fashion.

Bettie wore pieces that were more revealing – such black leather lingerie and spiky high heels. Just like Marilyn, Bettie also had the distinction of being one of the first Playboy Playmates. She served as the inspiration behind the vampy looks of some of today’s young artists who made use of the modern pinup look, such as the Pussycat Dolls.

Bettie’s look inspired Dita Von Teese, who is the most famous burlesque artist today. Her fascination with classic retro style helped launch her modeling career. She is now considered as the reigning Queen of Burlesque. Dita is known to use elaborate costumes and props for her performances, as well as complicated choreography. She was the one who popularized the Martini Glass routine, which was also used for a scene on the movie Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Other celebrities have used the classic pinup look to boost their careers.

Singer Katy Perry channeled Betty Page in her raven hair with bangs, red lipstick and 1940s and 1950s clothing. Without the influence of Bettie Page, the careers of artists such as Dita, Katie and the Pussycat Dolls will not be possible.
